Solar Energy Basics: Residential PV Systems
What Makes Up a Solar PV System?
Solar Cells
The basic blocks to convert sunlight into DC electricity.
Solar Panels
Multiple cells combined to capture more sunlight.
Inverter
Convert DC electricity from panels into AC for your home.
Battery / Grid Connection
Store energy for later use or send power to the grid.
How Solar Panels Generate Electricity
Solar panels are made from photovoltaic cells, usually based on semiconductor materials such as silicon. When sunlight reaches the cell, it excites electrons and creates direct-current electricity.
An inverter then converts this electricity into alternating current that can power lights, appliances, HVAC systems, and other household loads. Excess electricity can be used to charge batteries or exported to the grid.

Types of Residential Solar PV Systems
Grid-Tied Solar Systems
Connected to the utility grid. Excess electricity may be sent back to the grid depending on local policies.
Off-Grid Solar Systems
Designed for locations without utility service. Usually requires batteries and careful load planning.s.
Hybrid Solar Systems with Battery Backup
Combines solar panels, grid connection, and battery storage for better resilience and energy flexibility..
Why Battery Storage Matters
Battery storage allows homeowners to use more of their solar energy after sunset, during peak-rate periods, or during grid outages. While batteries are not required for every solar installation, they can improve backup resilience and reduce dependence on the grid.
